Proxmox — an open platform for server virtualisation
Full virtualisation (KVM) and containers (LXC), clusters, high availability a integrated backup — in a single open-source platform with no licence fees for virtualisation. Below you will find the architecture and key features of Proxmox VE, the product family including Proxmox Backup Server, and how licensing and support work.

What Proxmox VE is
Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE) is an open-source virtualisation platform built on Debian GNU/Linux. It combines two technologies in a single environment: KVM for full server virtualisation and LXC for lightweight Linux containers — managed through a common web interface, the command line and a REST API. The current major version is Proxmox VE 9.2 (as at August 2026).
After the change of VMware licensing under Broadcom, the costs of many companies — in Slovakia too — moved to a considerably more expensive subscription model. Proxmox VE is today the most frequently considered alternative to VMware vSphere, Hyper-V and XCP-ng: full functionality with no licence fees for the hypervisor, no vendor lock-in and with publicly available source code.
The platform also handles hyper-converged infrastructure: compute power, software-defined storage (Ceph, ZFS) and the network run on the same nodes — without a separate storage array.
Architecture and key functions
- Management from one placea web interface, a command line and a full REST API for automation.
- Cluster with no master nodeevery node can manage the entire cluster; the configuration is replicated by the Proxmox Cluster File System (pmxcfs) in real time over Corosync.
- High availability (HA)The HA manager automatically detects a node failure (watchdog fencing) and restarts the services on healthy nodes, without external tools.
- Live migrationwith shared storage, running virtual machines move between nodes without an outage.
- Storage as requiredlocal ZFS, LVM and directories; network NFS, CIFS, iSCSI, Ceph RBD and CephFS; Proxmox Backup Server for backups.
- Networks and SDNbridge, bonding, VLAN (802.1q) and a software-defined network with zone isolation including VXLAN/EVPN.
- Securityan integrated firewall at VM/container level with security groups, role-based permissions (RBAC) and authentication via Active Directory, LDAP or PAM including two-factor authentication.
- Backup and recoveryvzdump creates consistent backups of running guests; with Proxmox Backup Server you also get incremental backup, deduplication and client-side encryption.

Licensing and support
Proxmox VE is released under the licence GNU AGPL v3 — the entire source code and full functionality are available with no licence fees. There is no "paid edition" with unlocked features.
The manufacturer Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH offers optional subscription at several levels: it brings access to the Enterprise repository with more thoroughly tested updates, support with a guaranteed response time and access to the customer portal. We recommend a subscription for production environments; test and development environments can manage with the public repository.

Proxmox and Qintec: we deploy, migrate and train
We really do run Proxmox VE: we carried out a complete migration of a state institution's virtualisation environment from VMware to Proxmox VE, including changing the backup over to Proxmox Backup Server, as well as deploying Proxmox VE nodes in other public sector environments.

Is Proxmox VE free?
Yes. Proxmox VE is open-source software under the GNU AGPLv3 licence, with full functionality and no licence fees. The paid subscription is optional — it brings access to the Enterprise repository with more thoroughly tested updates, and manufacturer support.
Is Proxmox VE a full replacement for VMware vSphere?
For most corporate scenarios, yes: it covers virtualisation of VMs and containers, high-availability clusters, live migrations, software-defined storage and integrated backup via Proxmox Backup Server — with no licence fees for the hypervisor. We assess suitability for a specific environment individually.
Which storage types does Proxmox VE support?
Local ZFS, LVM and directory storage, network NFS, CIFS, iSCSI, Ceph RBD and CephFS, plus Proxmox Backup Server for backups. Shared storage allows live migration of running machines without an outage.
Will you help us with deployment or migration to Proxmox?
