Server virtualisation — design, high availability and operation

Virtualisation is a way of turning several physical servers into a single environment, in which computing power is allocated as needed and the failure of one node does not mean a service outage. We design, build and operate such environments — on Proxmox VE, Hyper-V and VMware.

We choose the platform only according to what the environment has to carry: consolidation, high availability, or recovery within an agreed time. It is installed by the people who also train on it — Qintec is Proxmox Training Partner.

What we supply

We design the environment from the task, not from a product sheet. The platform is the last decision of all — and we make it together with you:

  1. Architecture design (compute, storage, networks)

How many nodes, what storage and how the network will run. The hardware configuration and the number of licences come out of this step — not the other way round.

  2. Platform supply and installation

We build the cluster, set up the storage and the networks and hand the environment over with documentation, not with a password on a slip of paper.

  3. Migrations between platforms

We move running machines in stages so that operation does not stop. For a move from VMware, the whole procedure is set out on a separate page.

  4. Backup and high availability

First we agree the RTO and RPO — how long the service may be down and how much data may be missing. Only then do we design the cluster and the backup scheme.

  5. Operation and support P1–P4

After handover we take over monitoring and servicing; priorities and response times are part of the service contract.

we most often recommend
Proxmox VE

New environments and a replacement for expensive licences. Open source and no software fee; for production the vendor requires a subscription for every populated socket. How the platform works →

new environments · licence replacement

Microsoft Hyper-V

Where Windows Server is already running and the licences are paid for — the environment fits into existing identity management and tooling.

existing licences · Windows environment

VMware vSphere

Where the investment still makes sense or the platform is required by the application supplier. We also operate clusters spread across two locations.

Trained staff — we deploy what we teach

The environment is built by the same people who teach Proxmox VE. That has a practical consequence: at handover you are left not only with documentation but with a team that knows how to operate the environment — create a machine, restore it from a backup and understand what the monitoring is reporting. If you want to keep operation in your own hands, we will train you on exactly what we have deployed.

Experience in this area

We build virtualised environments where the running of an institution depends on them. Three projects from our references — the full wording is on the References page:

An environment that changed platform

The whole virtualisation environment moved to a different platform, including backup — in batches, within agreed windows.

High availability for critical systems

A cluster in which the failure of one node does not mean a service outage, complemented by new backup.

Frequently asked questions

Which virtualisation platform do you recommend?
It depends on the environment and the licences you already have. For new deployments and for replacing expensive licences we most often recommend Proxmox VE; we propose Hyper-V and VMware where existing investments and compatibility make sense.
Can you also handle a high-availability cluster?
Yes — we design and operate HA clusters, including software-defined storage (Ceph, ZFS) and live migration of virtual machines.
Do you also provide support after deployment?
Yes, operational support with priorities P1–P4 Handover always includes documentation and training.
What is the difference between a backup and high availability?
High availability deals with a hardware failure: the service comes up on another node of the cluster within minutes. A backup deals with loss or corruption of data — it returns the state to the time of the backup. Neither replaces the other, so we design them together.
What do RTO and RPO mean?
RTO is the time within which a service has to be available again. RPO is the amount of data you can afford to lose — that is, how often you need to back up. Both figures are set by the operation, not by the technology; we design the cluster and the backup scheme according to them.
How many servers do we need for high availability?
A high-availability cluster makes sense from three nodes up — with two there is nobody to decide which node is healthy. Where there is no third server, the vote can be supplied by a QDevice — an external arbiter outside the cluster that only needs network access. The vendor recommends it for two-node clusters.

Proxmox VE · Certified training

Certified Proxmox VE training in Slovak.

We run the courses according to the official Proxmox Server Solutions syllabus, at the GOPAS training centre in Bratislava. The courses are led by our Proxmox certified trainer from Qintec a.s., each participant works in their own lab environment and on completion receives a Certificate of Completion from Proxmox Server Solutions.
